20120513 library books
K loves to read.
And on Mother's Day, when mommy borrowed new books from the library, she just could not wait until we reach home.
p/s one of her favourite phrase nowadays is 'But I can't wait' (aka impatient)
pp/s while she can read simple English books on her own, she still need mommy to read Chinese books to her. Hopefully she will be able to read Chinese books independently soon!
1) reading while waiting for the food
2) eating and reading at the same time

20120422 K's first rainbow
Took public transport to Popo's place, and when we are running in (about 15 minutes from bus stop to Popo's place), it was drizzling lightly and we saw a rainbow!
This is K's first rainbow, btw, so mommy just had to take a snapshot. :)

20120421 shavings
K had a few enrichment classes, and most of them require the use of pencils, and sometimes, colour pencils.
So on weekends, Mommy will try to sharpen the pencils and colour pencils when she remembered so that K will not run out of pencils/colour pencils during class.
Below is a snapshoot taken of the pencial shavings. Just thought that the picture looks nice :P

20120406 First Pet
K's child care brought them to the Animal Resort.
Mommy should have known something like this will happen when she picked up K from child care the evening before and see bags of fish lying on a table near to the door.
So when mommy went to po po's place on that Friday evening, Po po told mommy that she brought fish home. K's first pets!
And according to Po po, while she was busy preparing dinner, the girl opened up the rubber band securing the plastic bag of fish and walk around the house swinging the plastic bag.
The poor fish must have seen their lives flash before their eyes. There are about 5 of them? With one that is very fat.
Anyway, the general consensus was that they won't last very long, so mommy just borrow a plastic container from Popo.
Imagine the next morning when daddy said that the fish had given birth (and 2 adults died)! So suddenly we have about 30 baby fish on our hands, and Mommy had no idea what to do next.
Daddy went back to work, and while K is having her enrichment class, mommy had to rush back to Popo's place to get a small fish tank, plus buy baby fish food, and grass for oxygen.
By the time they reach home, one of the adult fish had jumped out of the temporary home (see first picture for temporary home) and the mommy fish had given birth to more baby fish.
Shifted the baby fish to the fish tank. Another adult fish died, then in the end even the mama fish died, so only the baby fish is left.
K is not really interested in them. At the beginning she will ask for permission to feed them. And she will stand on her stool and peep into the tank sometimes (especially when we told her some fish had died). But all in all, mommy don't think she is ready for pets.
As for the baby fish, sometimes a few of them will die, so very soon, K's first pets might be no more.

20120224 Wicked!
Wicked the Musical had come to Singapore for quite some time, but mommy never went to watch due to one reason (busy) or another (no company). Then news of it ending soon, plus a 30% discount for passion card holders prompted mommy to quickly get the ticket.
Daddy is busy, so mommy only have a 5 year old for company. She had watched 3 kids' play previously (Gingerbread man, Jack and the Beanstalk and 3 Little Pigs) but no adult play so far. Hesitated abit, but encouraged by the Linette's comments that her little bee also enjoyed the show. So bought two of the cheaper seats at the Grand Circle (topmost level) row H.
After we have bought the tickets, Mommy mentioned to si yee yee and she wanted to watch too. But she was unable to get the seat next to us and had to get a seat one row below (row G) but nearer to the side.
To warm K up, Mommy downloaded a Wizard of Oz app from Google Play (formerly Android Market) for K to read (which she read and re-read so many times it drained the battery on mommy's Samsung S2).
Then, one day before, we saw this taxi at our car park and just had to take some pictures :P
Come Sunday..... K's first adult musical! We rushed all the way down after she had finished her Berries class. As we are not sure if we will be able to eat a decent full meal before the show starts, we bought snacks to eat after we have reached MBS via Bayfront MRT (which is much more convenient compared to last time when we have to walk from Millenia Walk)
We were not allowed to bring outside food in, but kiasu mommy was afraid that K will still be hungry and bought a container of popcorn (Cornery Gourmet from Ion) and a bottle of orange juice once we are inside the ticketed area. While the variety is limited, at least the price is not super black market, mommy paid a total of $9 for both items. There are also other snacks such as snickers, sandwich etc.
Our seats at row H is quite OK, we were able to see the stage when we sit upright (instead of lean back) on the seat. We can even see the expressions on some of the actor/actresses' face if the light is bright enough. There is also booster seat for little children like K. Of course, it will be better if we had bought tickets for the seats in front, but with a fidgety 5 year old on her first 2 hour musical? mmmmmm.....
Si yee yee's seat, on the other hand, though lower than ours, was more towards the side, and unable to see the full stage unless she really sit in front, and row G is the first row for the grand circle, and the handrails at the wall does block part of her view.
K very eagerly pulled us to go into the theater, and then, typical 5-year-old style, asked every 10 seconds why the show had not started.
The 2 main casts are Jemma Rix (who played Elphaba the green witch) and Suzie Mathers (who played Galinda/Glinda) (thank you Amanda Osborne for verifying this, and Mommy like the way she puts Rix's name first haha). Rix's voice was, as commented by another blogger, able to send goosebumps down your arms. But unfortunately, our seats are too far away to be able to hear the best of her voice (smooth ....), but on the other hand, it is not that bad as K covered her ears whenever Mather reached the higher soprano notes since she is still adverse to loud noises). And too few solo songs for Rix to show off her beautiful voice!
Had to explain quickly and briefly to K what each scene is about and answered her questions, which makes mommy missed out some of the dialogue and not being able to fully enjoy the show. Thank goodness the gentlemen next to us was not angry with the constant to-and-fro whispering.
K liked the show. She was shaking and legs and even swinging her body to the songs, and Mommy saw her subconsciously gesturing like Madame Morrible (of all people!) sometimes. :P
During the 15 minute break, we went to the toilet (nearby, ample rooms so the wait was quite short), and then persuaded si yee yee to sit with us (since K was either standing or sitting on Mommy's lap) as her view was quite restricted. K was quite tired and sleepy during Act 2, and was sad to only see Dorothy's shadow. But still, she managed to last throughout the show.
After the show, we took the MRT to daddy's office who drove us home (reached home around midnight).
Asked K if she liked the show and she said yes. Her favorite? Glinda (whom she said is nice). Of course, my favorite is Elphaba (Glinda is too ditzy for me).
Mommy's thought? The plot is weak, but the songs are catchy (mommy now had the songs on her handphone so that she can listen to it during the long journey to and from work). And mommy will better enjoy it if she were to get a better seat to hear the singing and admire the costumes and with no need to explain to the girl about so many things.
And now the mommy's head is filled with so many questions. Like is this is a parallel universe to the Wizard of Oz? Does Dorothy have the company of the tin man, lion and scarecrow in this universe? If yes, is it the evil intention of the tin man to bring Dorothy to Elphaba? Or is the plan of the scarecrow (since he said 'it worked!')? How does the scarecrow and Elphaba planned all this when they never got a chance to discuss?
And mommy think she will try to find the books by Gregory Maguire and read it. And of course, bring K to watch Wizard of Oz if the musical ever comes to Singapore (better seats next time).
To those parents who enjoyed musicals and who are thinking if they should bring their below 8 years old (Wicked's recommended minimum age) to the show, just go for it!

20120211 dessert
I must blog about this !!!! :P :P :P
The weather was so hot and humid in February.
I netsurf and found some people saying that white fungus is nourishing as it moisturises the lungs and its good for hot weather. Then found a recipe consisting of white fungus, north and south almonds, rock sugar, and some sweetener (I use papaya for this round).
So went to the Hock Hua near my mom's place to buy the ingredients.
Since K's enrichments are all over the place nowadays, have to cook halfway in the slow cooker and then instruct daddy to take over.
Here is the outcome - 4 small bowls of water (I have no idea why the recipe asked for 4 bowls of water when its for 2 servings) turned out to be like 5 big bowls of dessert (only 2 small bowls shown here).
Daddy complained about the large portion but still gulped it down, while K looked as if I was an evil empress who had just 'rewarded' her with du jiu (poisoned wine). She drank each spoonful with tears rolling down her eyes and only took a few spoonfuls pleading not to take anymore! Gosh!
afternote : seeing all the remaining ingredients (the white fungus came in one big packet), I did it again in March. This time round, only use 2.5 small bowl of water (then daddy itchy handed and added a quarter bowl more) and it came out to be 3.5 small bowls (now 'who' is 'leaking' water? Confess now!). Use pumpkin instead of papaya (because that is what I have in the fridge). This time round, K drank abit more and even proclaim the pumpkin yummy (but only for a while. What a fussy eater)! Even have enough to serve one bowl to the parttime cleaner who came, and she liked it too! :)

CNY 2012
Been very very busy with no time to blog.
Chinese New Year this year came especially early this year. Had a new project implementation on 1st January and have no time to prepare for CNY!
But manage to buy the Toy Story Alien Tees when daddy dragged us to the newly opened Changi Point Shopping Centre (something like that, its opposite Expo MRT).
On the first day, we went to the in law's place as usual. This time round, both the cousins came, and finally, here is a picture which K looked like a big sister rather than a little girl (when taking photos with her maternal cousins, or friends, or peers, some of them are younger than her) :P
Sok sok (daddy's brother) brought 2 hamsters, and K was so excited. She started off to stroke the hamster, and when she was given permission to carry it, she was very happy indeed. Till now, she is still saying that her favourite animals are hamsters and Megan (see 3rd picture)
Day 2 went to er yee yee's place because we are getting a small study table from her, and also to see Megan, er yee yee's dog.
This year, Megan is abit braver (compared to last year which she shivered so badly and so long when she saw strangers in the house). So after a while, K is able to take pictures with Megan! Er yee yee even took her polaroid so that K can have some hardcopy memories to bring home.
After that, we went to si yee yee's house for more kinect before going to po po's place for dinner.
Come weekend, and mommy met up with her secondary school friends again. Auntie Pauline is going back to Australia so its one last round of catching up as we do not know when we will see her again. Auntie Xiaowen is not feeling well and so Cheyanne did not come. Nonetheless, the remaining kids have fun playing at Auntie Jiaen's place.
Now anyway to rotate all this pictures within blogger????

20120102 mommy's thoughts
Mommy's thoughts to wrap up the year 2011....
.... went for McDonald's open house since it is her favourite fast food. During the short tour, daddy keep saying 'then why is it called junk food?' when the 'tour guide' talked about the healthy and hygiene standards used in McDonald's.
.... Kathleen tried her first half boiled egg and loved it (eating 2 at one go!)
.... Went for a children's play with some forum friends.....
Also started her 3 more enrichment classes - phonics (home based, just not my home! :P), swimming (nearby pool), and Chinese (at community centre).
Of course, also organised a chalet and went on a trip to Hong Kong, and brought her to some free art performances (ok, 1 performance and 1 exhibition).
Managed to sign her up for berries starting 2012, so we will see how it turns out. Hopefully it will give her a good foundation to enable her to develop a like (love is abit extreme) for the language and to self read. But there goes my social life as both Saturday and Sunday will be busy.
The little girl promises the following for 2012 :
- no more carrying
- no more stroller (already asking for it)
- self feeding (already ask me to feed her)
- self bathing
- self wiping after pee and poo
- sleep in her own bedroom (never happen cos she still has a fear of fire)
For mommy, 2011 is abit too eventful. Something happened in the family, and we tried to rally around abit, and I wonder if K will get the same support from her friends (since she does not have siblings) or cousins if she encounter problems in her life next time. My health is not exactly good, some still unresolved. My netbook had a near-death experience (no thanks Samsung Kies!). Still have to juggle work, parent volunteer, and taking care of the little girl.
Might be restricting access to her blog after she goes to primary school. Am quite comfortable with the security level at her child care (there is usually an adult near to the main gate, and they had recently installed another gate inside to prevent adults from going in after this year's HFMD scare) but there is no guarantee of the security in primary schools since the compound is much larger, or in the student care if the arrangement comes to that. Or maybe might even stopped blogging and switch to facebook or other medium since I find it harder and harder to find time for anything. Even falling sick is a luxury (think many mommies agreed with this) that I can hardly afford.
Hopefully I can complete the parent volunteer soon (though balloting is almost guarantee), and clear up my health issues soon. And hope for less work! :)

20121225 Christmas
Blink of an eye, and Christmas was here again.
This year, mommy is so busy that she did not bring Kathleen to the yearly Orchard Road Christmas lights viewing.
Kathleen had also asked for a Christmas tree, but mommy refuse to budge as she did not want to maintain another Christmas tree after throwing away the last one that was shedding so much leave it is a prime candidate for 'hair' transplant.
And as usual, mommy took shortcuts for the Christmas present exchanges (asked the kids what they want instead of racking her limited brain cells).
As mommy had told Kathleen that it will be a busy day, the girl actually woke up extra early that morning so that she could play with her own toys.
And mommy brought out the Christmas presents when she went into one of the bedrooms..
Kathleen unwrapped the first present from Auntie Long-legs. It was a Mother Garden picnic set! :) She liked it so much she totally forgot about the 2nd present that was from mommy and daddy (kick scooter that she had asked for). Hahahha...
The girl even wanted to bring the Mother Garden set to 四姨姨's place.
After that, we went to 四姨姨's place for lunch and a game of Xbox Kinect. The kids and adults all have a great time, but one thing about Kinect is that it cannot really detect short people (aka children) well enough.
After that, everyone went to po po's place for dinner and the Christmas presents.
As usual, mommy will try to take pictures of the individual kids and their Christmas presents. When she was asking Nicole to pose, her sister Julia who was seated next to her throw some wrappers into the air to try to block the photo shoot. Her aiming was so good that it was just in front of Nicole's face when the shutter was pressed! So mommy got that hilarious shot below.

Everyone then got involved in setting up the Sylvanian ice cream store which has many parts and lots of stickers (= lots of fun, for kids their age)
So that brings the end of another merry christmas! :)
This year, mommy is so busy that she did not bring Kathleen to the yearly Orchard Road Christmas lights viewing.
Kathleen had also asked for a Christmas tree, but mommy refuse to budge as she did not want to maintain another Christmas tree after throwing away the last one that was shedding so much leave it is a prime candidate for 'hair' transplant.
And as usual, mommy took shortcuts for the Christmas present exchanges (asked the kids what they want instead of racking her limited brain cells).
As mommy had told Kathleen that it will be a busy day, the girl actually woke up extra early that morning so that she could play with her own toys.
And mommy brought out the Christmas presents when she went into one of the bedrooms..

20111224 East Coast Park
On Christmas Eve, daddy indulged mommy's whims and the whole family (ok, 3 person only lah) went to East Coast Park for a cycling trip despite the gloomy monsoon weather.
Mommy is always thinking of getting a bicycle with a seat for Kathleen so that she can cycle her to nearby place, but before she put the money down for another bicycle (yes, there is one at home, a impulse buying which was unused because it is too high for mommy and her terrible cycling skills), she needs to know that she can balance with a kid in tow.
Daddy parked the car far away, and it was raining before we walked to the nearest bicycle kisok.
Its been a long time since mommy had been to the beach, and saw that nowadays, the bicycle kisok also rent out 4 wheels 'bicycles' that allows for 2 adults and 2 children, or 4 adults and 2 children. They move really slowly but its a good way for family to cycle together especially for people who cannot balance! :P
Seek shelter and waited for the rain to stop before we rented 2 bicycles, one with a child seat at the front, and one without. Mommy tried to cycle with Kathleen in the child seat, but cannot, so daddy took over. We took a break after 15minutes, and Kathleen just cannot wait to get back onto the bicycle again (despite her earlier reservations as her last experience on an adult bicycle was more than 3 years ago)!
Mommy then took over, and cycle halfway from Area C to the hawker centre before Kathleen asked for a change of rider because mommy is 'too slow'.
Had lunch at the hawker centre before cycling back to Area C when it rained heavily again and we had to stop at the same shelter as before.
At the hawker centre, mommy showed Kathleen her shaking hands as she had not cycled for a long time, and Kathleen laughed and keep imitating mommy's shaking hands.
The rain stopped about 20minutes before the end of the 2 hour rental, and daddy went to exchange the bicycle with the child seat in front to one with the child seat.
This time round, mommy found it easier to cycle, maybe because now her kneecaps are not pointing outwards (as her knees are blocked by the child seat if it is placed in front). So maybe a child seat at the back will be a better choice even though having a child seat in front is safer? Too bad they didn't have those bicycles with a normal black bicycle seat in front for younger children else mommy can try that out too!
All in all, think we cycled for 45 min to 1 hour during the 2 hour rental, the rest of the time being taken by lunch and all the resting due to the heavier rain (we cycled when its just drizzling).
After that, we let K went to the beach for some sand play. And she spent most of her time walking to the sea to get water into her pail, bringing it back to mat area, and then pouring it into the sand.
We also saw a man walking out to sea casting a net to catch fishes (we peeked into his pail, and yes, he got quite a few fishes inside) and a family of older children using a opened inverted umbrella to scoop sea water (errrrrr.....).
Mommy got 'chicken wings syndrome (三姨姨's terms for muscle cramp at the armpit/upper arm area after gripping the bicycle's handle too hard)' on the left arm that day :P

20111218 Dreams and Reality
National Museum recently had a exhibit Dreams and Reality, which features paintings, drawings and photography from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
And mommy brought Kathleen along when she found out that Passioncard holders are entitled to free entry during a particular 2 week period.
Here are some pictures especially for those who missed it (hardly any publicity or am I really out of touch with this country's happenings?).
Will try to label them correctly but pardon me if they are wrong as most of the photos that I have taken of the description turned out blur due to my lousy hp camera and the dimly lit venue (for ambience, I suppose).
This gorgeous huge picture was one of the first to greet us upon entry.

I enjoyed that silent hour or so inside the exhibit, and the booklet that the museum printed with simple explanation on impressionism does help for a newbie for me. There is even simple questions inside for older children, and an area at the end of the exhibition for children to doodle (with colour pencil and paper provide) and books provided for the visitors to read more about the artists.
While Kathleen did not run around screaming (she does talk too loudly once in a while), she was pretty bored and pretend to read 'The 3 little pigs' from the exhibit booklet. :P Her favourite? The Knight of the flowers, by Georges Rochegrosse, I think mainly because it is one of the most colourful painting in the whole exhibition.
